Cholelithiasis in Down's syndrome.
Cholelithiasis is considered uncommon in infancy, childhood, and adolescence. We performed a prospective, controlled study showing that children with Down's syndrome have a significantly higher prevalence of cholelithiasis (4.7%) compared with controls (0.2%). Clinicians should be aware of the risk of gallstones in children with Down's syndrome.

Gallstones are a common and costly disease with a projected increase in prevalence due to the increasing ageing population. Numerous endogenous and environmental factors are aetiologically related to this multifactorial disease, and genetic studies continue to unravel the pathobiological mechanisms related to gallstone formation. In particular, variants of genes encoding hepatobiliary transport...

was emphasized by Bodian (1952). Necropsy examination of the liver in 46 patients, ranging in age from 2 days to 7 years, showed biliary ductule byperplasia or focal biliary fibrosis or both, in 35 patients, 8 ofwhom were 2 weeks old or younger. Consequently, it seems probable that liver scans show a situation which is present in most CF patients. We agree with Feigelson et al. (1972) that scin...
متن کاملAetiology of cholelithiasis in childhood.
During the past 10 years case reports of cholelithiasis in childhood and adolescence have appeared fairly regularly and 24 cases under the age of 14 have been described in the English literature during this period. Though stated as being 'infrequent in early life' (Rapoport, 1954), most paediatricians must occasionally have found gall bladder disease to be the cause of hitherto unexplained abdo...
متن کاملCholelithiasis and Wilson disease.
We have studied three children with Wilson disease who had clinical symptoms suggestive of cholecystitis as well as radiologic evidence of gallstones, subsequently proven at the time of laparotomy. The gallstones from the patients with Wilson disease had an appreciably higher content of cholesterol than gallstones from age-matched children with hemolytic disease. Since gallstones may be present...
